GRUNDY CENTER — The Class 2A No. 3 Grundy Center volleyball team got off to a strong start with Tuesday’s 3-0 performance in a season-opening triangular.

The Spartans swept 1A No. 4 AGWSR (21-10, 21-8), Hudson (21-14, 21-17) and 4A No. 15 Waverly-Shell Rock (21-7, 21-11) to make an early statement.

Outside hitter Carlie Willis — a St. Cloud State commit — piled up 33 kills on opening night, hitting at a .519 efficiency rate. Kayden Muller added 10 kills, Shirley Monaghan had nine while Ellery Luhring and Paige Venenga added five kills each.

Luhring ended the night with 50 assists.

Willis also led the Spartans with 15 digs, Lucy Lebo pitched in with 13 and Luhring had 12 digs to go with a team-leading two blocks. Venenga served 37-for-39 with six acecs while Luhring was 26-for-27 with eight aces to pace Grundy Center.

Comets sweep, Mustangs split in opening triangular

LE GRAND — The Class 1A No. 10 BCLUW volleyball team tipped off its season with a 2-0 sweep at th East Marshall triangular on Tuesday night.

The Comets recorded wins over Meskwaki Settlement (25-3, 25-12, 25-7) as well as host East Marshall (25-11, 25-13). East Marshall topped Meskwaki in the final match of the night (25-13, 25-10).

Grace Farnsworth led BCLUW with 22 kills on the night, and Mallori Jones finished with 14. Miranda Jones piled up eight kills against East Marshall alone. Senior setter Sydney Anderson tallied 41 assists in the two matches combined.

Callie Swanson led the Comets with 13 digs on the night, and she also served 20-for-20 with two aces. Anderson went 32-for-32 with nine aces — all against Meskwaki — while Raegan Crawford served 23-for-24 with seven aces.

East Marshall was led by Morgan Neuroth with nine kills, Raylee Gile with seven kills, and both Makayla Hala and Alainey Happe had six. Ava Bringmann totaled 29 assists for the Mustangs.

Bailey Grant’s 11 digs led the defense, while Hala paced the front line with three blocks. Makayla Kerber was the team’s top server, going 16-for-16. Bringmann was 12-for-14 with four aces, and Gile was 12-for-14 with two aces.
